AKD Nursery Picks

Our youngest is 18 months old now so I thought I would write about nursery design and decor before I get too far away from it all. Creating a room that feels comforting and enjoyable for you as a parent is just as important as making it sweet and soothing for your little one. both of you will be spending a lot of time in there; make it fun for everyone! Below are some of my favorite nursery picks as a mom and an interior designer.

Cribs

Here are some unique cribs that caught my eye. They go with almost any decor or style and all of them can transition to a toddler bed, which saves money in the long run. Each crib has a Greenguard Certification, which means the wood and finishes do not emit harmful chemicals into the air that your baby breathes. I would highly recommend making sure all your nursery furniture carries this certification. When looking for a mattress, consider one made with organic materials and free of harmful glues, plastics, and foams that can adversely affect the air quality as well. They should have a Greenguard Certification or something similar like EWG, GOTS, or Made Safe.

Bedding

Playful, charming crib sheets are a great starting point for creating a one-of-a-kind nursery. I love using textiles to anchor the rest of a design. They may have a fun pattern, a unique color combination, or an interesting theme like travel that you can expand on. Look for organic cotton or 100% cotton sheets to ensure they are gentle and safe for your baby’s skin. Here are some of my favorite sources for crib sheets and blankets (below from left to right): Petite Plume, Pehr, and Pottery Barn Kids.

Floor Lamps

Functional and chic, I found this tray lamp to be so helpful, especially for those long nights. It offers a soft light to see while feeding your baby or reading a bedtime story without having to turn on a glaring overhead light. The tray has room for bottles, books, burp cloths, phones, tissues, or whatever you need for a more comfortable night. If this is not your style, I also love these two from West Elm Kids.

Chairs

Having been through multiple GI bugs in our house, a chair with a slipcover has been a lifesaver. Rip it off, throw it in the wash, and the chair is as good as new. If that is not a concern, below are some other chairs that will add color and a little “wow” to the room without sacrificing comfort. Most of these selections can be upholstered in different fabrics and colors, so you can customize it to go with your other nursery decor.

Daybed

If you have the space, I highly recommend a daybed for you or your partner to sleep on if you don’t think you can leave your baby’s room. There have been plenty of nights where my husband and I have slept in our sons’ rooms either because they were sick or scared (we prefer to keep our bed to ourselves!). This can turn into a fun reading nook and spot for friends to spend the night when your child gets bigger. Like the chairs, there are numerous fabrics to choose from for this piece.
