Check out my newest blog post on the website which is all about ways to make your home functional as you age. I even incorporate a lot of the ideas in this post for clients way under retirement age, especially if it's a renovation and they are planning on staying in their home long-term. ⁠

Creating functional spaces for all abilities is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. As a former orthopedic surgery PA, I worked with numerous patients whose physical abilities were limited in some way. It was always a hard discharge to home when you knew your patient had to go back to a space that most likely had stairs, no grab bars, a tub that was difficult to get into, etc. ⁠

Now as an interior designer, I have the ability to help those with physical disabilities reinvent their homes so that they can stay there longer, be safe, and maximize their independence. We can help clients with anything from mild arthritis and back pain to those who need a walker or wheelchair to get around. Studies have shown that older adults who can stay in their homes as they age have better mental health and memory. This blog is a great way to get started and if you need our expertise in this area, we can help.

There is something lovely and comforting about bei

There is something lovely and comforting about being surrounded by books. ⁠
I remember being in the Chestnut Hill Barnes and Nobles during grad school and maybe it was because I studied too much and I was stressed, and I started crying in the Classics section because it was like I was surrounded by all these good friends. I think I missed reading something that wasn't about acid base disorders. I know, that may sound weird. But there is no limit, in my mind, to how many books you should have and I love sticking them around the house to add some interest and color.

I always forget what I have when it comes to seasonal decor, so if you are like me, I recommend "shopping" your closets/storage areas before you head off to your favorite home goods store. I cannot overstate how much the exterior of your house matters. As a huge plant and garden lover, I can appreciate a good landscape design. When we purchased our home in Greensburg, PA three years ago, everything around our house was a tangled, overgrown mess. The thought of re-doing everything around our house and yard was intimidating. Having lived in the South, I knew I needed an expert (you can always rely on a Southerner to assist you with your gardens). I reached out to Carmen Johnston of @bespokegardenplans and she and her team were able to give us a beautiful, comprehensive landscape plan that we have been able to implement.

This is terrazzo. A classic material but one that is getting alot of attention nowadays, especially in tile form with new colors and additions. This material is sustainable; it is made of recycled stone and cement. It is incredibly durable and easy to clean. These are renderings I did for a design competition last year for a breakfast nook, great room, and study with SketchUp and Enscape. Although renderings are no substitute for the real thing, they can help clients visualize their space and convey ideas. A large part of what I do is communicating design ideas and plans to clients, contractors, and others with drawings and renderings so that projects go smoothly and turn out beautifully.

We visited Williamsburg, VA on our way to the beach and it is still as charming and inspiring as ever. I remember my first trip here when I was about 10 years old and this place left me with an enduring love and admiration for boxwoods, formal gardens, Georgian style, and wallpaper. Colonial Williamsburg was restored, including 89 original structures, with the help of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. starting in the 1920s. I'm so grateful it still here for us to enjoy!
